#48 The Avengers (2012) Dir. Joss Whedon

Aside from Spider-Man 2 this has become my favourite comic-book movie of all time. I’ve seen it twice now and it’s such an infectious ride. Shamelessly entertaining and written with all the zip, sting and wit that we expect from Joss Whedon. I have no idea how he pulled this movie off but he nailed it completely. It has an interesting and unconventional structure plotted around two massive set pieces that I think is pretty clever. Everyone in this movie brings their total A-game though Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and the CGI Hulk pretty much steal the show in all of their individual (and shared) scenes. The most entertaining film I’ve seen all year so far.

Official trailer for The Avengers (2012)

The Avengers + Joss Whedon + Nine Inch Nails = A good trailer. But in honesty while the explosions and badassery looks all well and good, the best bits of the trailer are when Stark trolls on everyone in Whedon-speak. AMAZING.

Just saw Captain America which was pretty sweet. Awkwardly sat through the credits with the cleaners stood eyeing me up but it totally paid off. Took this sneaky picture. Can’t wait for this movie.

So excited for The Avengers

Everything about it is just perfect. It’s like one of those dream movies people come up with “A gangster movie directed by Martin Scorsese starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino!”. I’m sure many people have thought to themselves “Oh God imagine an Avengers movie written and directed by Joss Whedon” and now it’s actually happening. It’s so surreal. I can’t think of a better pairing of material and filmmaker. You can just close your eyes and imagine Chris Evans and Downey Jr. tearing into each other with some fast paced Whedon-isms. And because Whedon is so dedicated to his characters you know that everyone on screen is gonna have their moment.

I just hope the studio lets him do his thing and doesn’t get all nervous in post-production “hmm, this dialogue is a little too edgy for my liking…can we re-shoot this?”. Ugh. I really really just hope this one comes out how it should. If they let it be, it’s almost guaranteed to be great. There has never been a movie like this before. I mean like every one of the main characters have had their own film and to bring them all together…it’s like putting James Bond, Harry Potter, Lara Croft and Mickey Mouse in a movie, but better. Only 10 months to wait too. SO so excited.
