August 2010
You know, I expect a lot of people to go “Huh?!” when they hear this but I actually think it’s a great idea, not only for the Wolverine franchise but also for Aronofsky. I get the feeling he’s been trying to break into the comic-book movie scene for a long time now (Remember when he was going to adapt Batman: Year One, and then was attached to RoboCop?). I really think he could do a Christopher Nolan and breath some fresh life into a dying concept. I doubt this will happen but it would be fantastic if it did.
Was pretty good. I’ll be honest though, I was slightly underwhelmed by the whole thing. I thought it was wonderfully inventive with all the visuals and sound effects but it got pretty repetitive after the first hour or so. Really fun just not as “AWESOME!” as I was hoping. I actually kind of wish I had read the comics first now so I would have had a bit more to think about. On the plus, for the first time I felt like I was seeing Michael Cera playing a new character for a change and I loved most of the cast. Fantastic soundtrack too. Bullshit on the ending though. *SPOILER* Scott should have totally gone for Knives, what was all that about?! Ramona was such a bland bitch in my opinion.
Overall I really enjoyed it but Edgar Wright still hasn’t topped Shaun of the Dead for me. I’ll do a more detailed review when I can be bothered.
Bands I saw: Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, Dizzee Rascal, The Libertines, Arcade Fire, Limp Bizkit, Cypress Hill, Weezer, Blink 182, Klaxons, Two Door Cinema Club, Delphic, Lost Prophets, Biffy Clyro, Queens of the Stone Age, Phoenix and LCD Soundsystem.
The Best Bands:
- WEEZER
The absolute pinnacle of the weekend for me. Weezer have been one of my favourite bands for so many years and this was the first time I saw them live. They opened with Hash Pipe and continued through a very Blue Album-heavy set, (not complaining). Rivers Cuomo is the greatest front man I have ever seen man. There’s just so much to talk about. He came onto the stage kicking a football around and for the rest of the set he was either racing up and down in front of the crowd or climbing atop all the advertisement boards. He was pulling people out of the crowd, hugging them and letting them sing a long then he even RAN OUT FROM BEHIND THE STAGE INTO THE FUCKING FIELD. It was like a fish to the sharks, suddenly the entire left side of the crowd just started chasing him. God knows how he survived but he did. An amazing show and one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. Some surprising little tunes in there too like the MGMT/Lady Gaga medley (with Rivers in blonde wig) they’ve been doing for a while as well as an impromptu version of Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag. Incredible. Wait til you see the pictures I got.
- ARCADE FIRE
Another band I love. Their headlining set on Friday was awesome. Their music is generally so large in scope and emotion and the sheer amount of people on the stage made this feel almost like watching some sort of big choir. They exploded onto the stage with Ready to Start (my favourite song off of the new album) and filled the rest out with all the key songs from their back catalogue. Stand outs being an absolutely insane rendition of Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) with Win Butler shouting “This is what you’ve been saving your fucking energy for!”, Regine’s singing on Sprawl II (she’s so great) and the Wake Up encore. - THE LIBERTINES
Only a recent fan of The Libertines and was a bit dubious due to all the bullshit that surrounds them but their show on Friday was great. Never mind all the shit you hear about Pete Doherty, he certainly knows how to pull off his whole “bad boy rock star” schtick and he actually came across as quite a cool guy. There was generally such a fun vibe about The Libertines, so many catchy little tunes and they put on a great show. Probably the biggest surprise of the weekend. - LIMP BIZKIT & BLINK 182
I put these two together because I’m not a huge fan of either but just like anyone who was around in like 1999/2000 you knew most of their songs and to this day you cant help but sing a long. Anyway yeah, these were both amazing. Totally still got it in them and I hope they both have some new albums in the works. Felt pretty nostalgic seeing them both. - PHOENIX
Again I’ve only got into these quite recently but they were fantastic. The lead singer, Thomas Mars is such a cool guy and has such a beautiful little voice.
LCD Soundsystem, Queens of the Stone Age, Biffy Clyro and Dizzee Rascal were so good too.
You know in movies where a character will be having a dream and then they wake up and think everything is fine but then it turns out they’re still in the dream and like Freddy Krueger jumps out of the fucking closet or something? Then they wake up for real all scared and sweaty.
Well I always thought “that’s such bullshit. I’ve never once had a dream where I’ve woken up and just done some mundane tasks only to realise I’m still dreaming”. I always thought it was just a cheap little movie trick. Well today I totally had one of those dreams.
I woke up to find the phone ringing, answered it and Jess was on the other end saying she was at the door (as she usually does) so I let her in and we were just chatting as usual, nothing out of the ordinary. Then I heard the phone ringing for real and suddenly woke up. Jess wasn’t here at all. I was just alone on my bed.
Crazy man. Also, since Inception has anyone else found themselves constantly having such vivid dreams? People are stealing my ideas or something I swear to god.

Haha I’ve heard that legend too man, I know Wrath of Khan always gets a lot of praise. Huddersfield CEX is actually usually pretty lame so I think I just got lucky with this one. The guy serving me was saying how some guy brought them all in like the same morning, so I guess I was just in the right place at the right time. And I will keep my eyes peeled for whales ;) haha. I’ll shove reviews up for them as I get through them all.
Hope you get your work done dude.
Remember the other day I said I got one of my questions answered personally by Edgar Wright? Well Empire have got the transcript online so my 5 seconds of fangasm are now officially crystalized in history.
Look for the username LeonardShelby ;)
Yeah Yeah Yeah- Heads Will Roll
Awesome. Can’t beleive you haven’t seen it yet. I know you though Christian Sinclair, you’ll see the poster for Piranha 3D and see that instead. It’s breasts and killer fish in 3D Christian….BREASTS AND KILLER FISH.

Well it IS a true story and that’s how it ended. What better cumupance for a wiseguy than to live the life of a normal person. That’s worse than death for them.
Juan what is wrong with you?! Scorsese endings just aren’t your friend. Would have you preferred it if he went inside his house and he was like “Psyche bitches! I kept the diamonds from the Lufthansa heist!” then he puts on some shades, lights a cigar and drives off into the sunset?
Oh and Jackie Brown gets better and better with repeat viewings. You’ve certainly made a friend for life with that one.

All I will say to that is hate the game not the player…..no that doesn’t quite work does it. Either way there are a good handful of other Scorsese gems that I think you would enjoy. But one step at a time. It will be a long process but I’ll convert you in the end. I will make it my life’s goal.
If you still love it as much by the time the credits have rolled (which I guarantee you WILL) then you MUST see Casino. It’s pretty much Goodfellas in Vegas (though I hate that description) and Scorsese uses a lot of the same techniques. I’ll make a Scorsese fan out of you yet.

your tags are like an early sign of schizophrenia i swear to god haha
Haha it’s not an early sign, its a symptom. I’m long gone.
Understandably! It’s a crazy movie. I can’t make heads or tails out of it but the reason I enjoy Lynch’s movies is because they’re such an experience to watch. The images, the sound, the performances, its all so visceral and make me feel a certain way that no other filmmaker can. I just think Inland Empire is his boldest and most balls the wall movie. Actually understanding what the fuck is going on isn’t that important to me. Its just a mad (and LONG) movie.
I decided to make a new blog to put my film reviews and stuff on instead of posting them all on this one. I’ve transferred the ones I’ve done so far across so If you enjoy my little reviews follow this blog! :)
